Pontoon

Play Pontoon for free and try out the strategy table

This card game is especially well known and very popular in the British Isles. Since it can be found in some online casinos today, the game is also becoming increasingly popular in Germany. To learn more about the peculiarities compared to standard Blackjack and to familiarize you with the rules, you can play Pontoon for free on my site. Also read my tips and use the provided strategy table. This useful information will certainly help you if you ever want to gamble for real money in the casino.

If you want to play Pontoon for real bets, I recommend one of my top casinos linked on this page. With these in the EU licensed providers you will not only find the game presented here, but also numerous other Blackjack and casino games.

The Pontoon rules at a glance

The base of the Pontoon is the classic Blackjack. Since I have written a separate page about the rules and terms of this card game, I will not go into the more detailed explanations here. Instead, I will concentrate on the Pontoon peculiarities, which I would like to illustrate with the casino game from NetEnt. This variant is played with 8 decks of 52 cards each. As with Blackjack, the aim here is to get as close as possible to the card value 21. "Blackjack" is called "Pontoon" in the game presented here and is paid 2:1 instead of 3:2. Your two starting cards are dealt face up as usual, while the dealer's cards are dealt face down. The dealer then checks whether he has already received a pontoon with his two cards. If this is the case, the dealer wins and the round ends immediately. There is no insurance in this game. If the dealer does not have 21 points, you can take the usual actions, which should be known from Blackjack.

There are a few differences to note. So if there is a tie, the dealer wins in every case. In addition, you must always move up to a card value of 15. Only then can you stop. The dealer, on the other hand, has to draw up to 16 eyes and stops at a hard 17. At the soft 17, he must take another card. It can be doubled at any time, but multiple doubling is also possible. Beside the pontoon there is another possibility to win a round with the so-called five-card trick. If you can draw a total of five cards without going over 21, you will receive a 2:1 payout, just like for a pontoon. So there is an additional tension that lies outside of side bets. Overall, the house advantage of 0.38% is slightly higher for the game than for the well-known Blackjack.

Tips and tricks for the best Pontoon strategy

As with almost all Blackjack games, there are separate strategy tables for these particular variants. It looks a bit different from the standard version because you don't have any information about the dealer's cards and you have to draw even at less than 15 points. Much more important is when to use the "hit" function (called twist) and when to double (called buy) - "stand" is called "stick" in this game. Only if you take the following procedures to heart, you can keep the house advantage as low as possible.

It can be simply said that with a total value of 4 to 7 you always have to take another card. With 8 eyes you should either use the "hit" function or double again shortly before the fifth card. At 10 and 11 you should double in any case. Up to the value of 14 eyes, it is advisable to take another card and double again before the fifth. From 17 it is advisable to stop. When dividing it looks just as difficult: Double eights and aces should be split. The rest is out of the question, at least according to the perfect Pontoon strategy.

Pontoon: The British game sets unexpected accents

Clever players look at the special rules of casinos and tables and then, armed with detailed knowledge, compare the odds. With an optimal strategy the house advantage of the casino can be reduced with usual rules to 0.42%, some on-line variants lower this advantage even to meager 0.38%!

Learn the Pontoon game rules well, it's worth it!

Even though Pontoon has a lot in common with Blackjack, there are many details that give the card game a slightly different character. Of course, just like the dealer at the start of the game, you are dealt two cards, we probably already know that, but what happens then is slightly different. Often you will look for a 10 in vain in the up to 8 decks. The number of cards in the deck has been reduced from 52 to 48 and the 10s have been hit. However, the resulting disadvantage against the player is compensated by some extras.

For example, there are very interesting hands, such as 7-7-7, which beat natural Blackjack at some tables. Or the 5-card trick, where you get to 21 with 5 cards and make incredible winnings. As usual, you will find all the important rules for Pontoon in our game rules category.

How to play Pontoon like a pro

In Pontoon, it does make sense not to listen to the feeling, but to use cool and casual mathematical basics to make the right decision for each hand and each dealer's open card. Hit, Stand, Double, Split, these are your choices, so choose wisely.

If you don't want to memorize the complex table with many hundreds of entries, you should choose a simplified strategy, which we will fortunately present to you. You won't be able to minimize the house advantage, but you can combine a lot of fun with great winnings!

It is important that you use the information the dealer gives you. Experienced players know what we mean by this, but for all newcomers to the land of the black jack, of course we explain it! The dealer must show one of his two cards face up. This gives you an indication of the dealer's likely hands and allows you to adjust your decision accordingly.

Do you already know about the variants of the Pontoon?

Pontoon is itself a variant of Blackjack, but there are also games that are similar to Pontoon. The best example for players from German-speaking countries is 17 and 4. This somewhat simpler variant plays very similarly to Pontoon, but is less sophisticated and reflects on the basic idea of the game, which is to get as close as possible to 21 without overshooting the target. You can also play 17 and 4 with the children at family celebrations, because bets are of course not necessary here.

A great variation is the Spanish 21. This game is similar to Pontoon to confuse, but has in detail other rules, which we of course like to discuss in our article about the variants of the Pontoon. Finally, you should also give the Pontoon a chance at online casinos. Because there are also some providers who want to bring Pontoon to your screen. So take the opportunity was and experience the fascination of Pontoon also on PC, Mac, Tablet and Smartphone!

In conclusion, players looking for the lowest house advantage should avoid Pontoon. However, if you feel the appeal of variety, you should consider this option when visiting the casino. Especially the hidden cards of the croupier change the strategy considerably and also the thrill increases considerably. In addition, the five-card trick ensures varied situations and appealing winnings. So just try the game out. If you like it, you can play it in the following real money casino. As with all the reviews, I've made sure it's a reputable provider, so you can concentrate on the fun of the game.
